BA warn cabin over strikes; say 4500 to apply for new jobs
29.06.10
BA has warned its cabin crew they face the risk of legal action or even dismissal if they go ahead with another round of strikes over the summer and autumn, the Financial Times reports. If the cabin crew strike again over the same issues, a legal expert told the newspaper that they could legally be dismissed.
BA also revealed yesterday that 4500 people have registered interest in being hired as Heathrow cabin crew since it started a recruitment drive last week for 1250 new staff on reduced salaries at its main base. They will be employed in what is effectively a new airline, which will further weaken the current cabin crew's ability to strike in the future.
The moves come as the airline and the Unite union that represents most of its cabin square up for a new bout in what has become one of the worst industrial relations battles ever seen at BA, with no sign that either side will back down from their entrenched positions.
