The Unite union will resume talks with BA in their dispute over pay and staffing next week while preparing for legal action over the airline’s withdrawal of travel perks for striking workers, it announced yesterday. The union claims BA breached European human rights laws when it withdrew the benefits for striking cabin crew. It also believes the concessions were taken away without proper disciplinary procedures being followed. BA said it had acted properly in withdrawing the benefit.
Unite said yesterday that it will resume talks with the airline next week under the auspices of the conciliation service ACAS. The union also said it is preparing to provide additional financial support to members who have suffered hardship after losing pay whilst striking.
It said in a statement: ‘Unite remains determined to secure a settlement to this dispute acceptable to cabin crew. Until such an agreement is secured, we will continue to support our members both financially and legally.’
BA said it had acted properly in withdrawing the travel benefit. It said in a statement: ‘Staff travel is a non-contractual benefit that the company can withdraw at its discretion. Our cabin crew knew that if they took part in strike action, they would lose their travel perks. We totally reject these claims from Unite and will defend our position vigorously.’
