EU and US to boost airport security

The EU and US have agreed to increase screening of airport passengers, onboard security and data sharing, US officials said yesterday. The officials, 'recognising their ‘shared responsibility for preventing terrorist attacks on civilian flights', agreed to develop concrete proposals for the airport security upgrades by April, EUobserver.com reports.
US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said US-EU cooperation must be stronger in data collection, analysis and sharing, and officials must work to improve aviation standards and deployment of better screening technology. The discussions follow the failed terror attackon Christmas day on a US-bound flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
The EC is to speed up its evaluation of a Europe-wide rollout of full-body scanners, which some member nations have said raise privacy concerns. Ms Napolitano said use of full-body scanners would not be a deciding factor in discussions, although the US officials consider them helpful.
