BA warn over likely APD rise
21.06.10
BA has warned that Government plans to increase the tax on flights will see passengers avoid UK airports and fly via Continental hubs. A rise in Air Passenger Duty (APD) announced by the last Government, which is set for November, will cost a family of four travelling abroad up to £300 extra tax. However there are concerns that this could be raised further by plans to be implemented by the new Government, which are expected to be announced in the emergency budget tomorrow.
The new Government is planning to tax airlines on a per plane basis rather than the number of passengers are being carried, as the current air tax operates. A spokesman for BA said yesterday that air travel in the UK is already the most heavily taxed in the world. He said: ‘Increased taxation on UK flights will create a financial incentive for customers to fly via Continental hubs rather than direct from or transiting through UK airports.’
