Big emissions cut targeted by BA
20.07.10
BA has partnered with US renewable energy firm Solena Group to establish Europe's first sustainable jet-fuel plant, with plans to use the low-carbon fuel from 2014. The fuel, derived from waste biomass, will be manufactured at a facility that will convert waste materials destined for landfill into aviation fuel, BA announced yesterday.
BA estimates that the amount of fuel generated by the new plant will be more than twice the amount required to make all of its flights at London City Airport carbon-neutral. It has signed a binding letter of intent to purchase all of the fuel produced by the plant, which will be built by Solena Group.
The scheme is expected to create 1200 jobs and significantly reduce local authority landfill tax bills, BA said in a statement. The airline is targeting a 50% reduction in its net carbon emissions by 2050.
