Ministers admit third runway will mean more short haul flights

A third runway at Heathrow Airport will mean more domestic flights, the Evening Standard reports the Government has said. In evidence to the Commons Transport Committee inquiry into aviation, the Department for Transport admitted that a third runway would result in more flights to parts of the UK.
The DfT said: ‘Additional runway capacity would clearly provide more opportunity to cater for demand for regional air services.' A BAA spokesman confirmed this, telling the newspaper: ‘There is a powerful argument that regions of the UK need to be connected to Heathrow in order to do business around the world.’
