BA cabin crew racism claim over lost travel benefits
19.07.10
BA has been accused of racial discrimination by some of its cabin crew, opening a new front in an industrial dispute that reaches a critical point this week as the result of a fresh ballot on a settlement off from the airline is announced, the Guardian reports.
The newspaper reports a group of BA cabin crew are claiming the removal of discounted travel from strikers discriminates against employees based in Scotland, Ireland and mainland Europe who use the scheme to commute to and from Heathrow. The group, calling themselves Crew Defence, represent 75 employees who are lodging cases with an employment tribunal and plan to sue for compensation if their claim is upheld.
The move comes as the Unite trade union prepares to announce the result of a ballot on a peace deal tomorrow. If cabin crew fail to back the proposal, the union is expected to ballot on further strike action in the long-running and bitter dispute.
