Unite plans fresh BA strike ballot
19.06.10
Holidaymakers face a summer and autumn of travel disruption after BA cabin crew union Unite wrote to members suggesting a strike ballot that could mean walkouts over the 12 weeks from August 3 until October 25. The union plans to vote on a strike over BA's 'vindictive and unfair actions against striking workers,' it said, refferring to the 55 striking cabin crew suspended in March (some have already been dismissed) and the withdrawal of travel benefits for striking cabin crew.
The union's joint secretaries, Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson, told their 12,000 cabin crew members that a ballot is planned over summer and autumn industrial action. However, although previous ballots have gained strong support, there are reports - even from the union at the end of the last five-day strike - that 'skint' crew are less likely to support further action that does not appear to be working.
Support for the action is also suggested to be waning in the face of a firm stance from the airline and its ability to increase flights operated in each successive strike. BA chief executive Willie Walsh has pledged to stans firm 'for as long as it takes' during any further strikes and continue with the strategy of using other BA staff and chartered planes to run as many services as possible.
