US flights down despite ‘open skies’

The US - EU ‘open skies’ deal nearly 2 years ago was expected to boost transatlantic air services and lower fares. However, it appears to be failing, according to flight figures from aviation data business company OAG. The number of airline seats on offer between North America and Western Europe this month is 5% down on January 2008 (before the deal came in in March that year), and down 6% this month compared with January last year.
After years of negotiation, the US and the EU agreed a first phase of an opening up of more transatlantic routes, with part of the agreement allowing more airlines to use Heathrow Airport for their transatlantic flights. However, the OAG figures also show that Heathrow has 2% fewer flights and seats on all services this month compared with January 2009.
