BA announce biofuel plant plans
15.02.10
British Airways has announced that it has struck a deal to build the first plant in Europe to produce jet fuel from waste materials. 500,000 tonnes of waste will be used by the facility each year to produce 16 million gallons of fuel.
Construction of the plant, to be sited in east London, will start within two years and it is set to produce fuel from 2014, creating up to 1200 jobs. BA said the plant would produce twice the amount of fuel needed to power its flights from London City Airport. However, it will only account for about 2% of the fuel for lights from Heathrow.
