BA / AA to receive US antitrust approval
14.02.10
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) says a plan by American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia to more closely coordinate schedules on transatlantic flights should receive antitrust immunity. But to protect competition, the airlines must give up four pairs of takeoff and landing slots to competitors for new service between the US and Heathrow Airport.
The US Justice Department had said that allowing the venture could cause fares to rise up to 15% on some transatlantic routes, but the DOT decided to back the application. A final decision on antitrust immunity will follow a 60-day public comment period.
