EC set to clear BA / American alliance next week?
10.07.10
BA, American Airlines and Iberia will receive antitrust clearance from European regulators next week for their transatlantic joint venture, 'people with direct knowledge of the matter' told Reuters yesterday. The airlines want to work together setting schedules, fares and frequent flier programmes on transatlantic routes, sharing profits from their joint venture. They have agreed to give up a number of slots at Heathrow in a bid to ease competitive concerns raised by the European Commission.
‘A Commission decision is set for Tuesday,’ one of the sources told Reuters, referring to the EU executive's regular weekly meeting. Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, who has said he supports consolidation in the airline industry, is set to announce the decision at a news conference on Wednesday. The sources declined to be identified and the Commission declined comment, the news agency reports.
