Walsh puts pressure on cabin crew as vote launched
07.07.10
BA will guarantee all of its flights (we assume long haul flights only) will operate should there be any new strike action by its cabin crew, the airline's Chief Executive Willie Walsh said in an interview today. The comments came as the airline's cabin crew started to vote on a revised pay offer from the airline, with hopes that a resolution to their long-running dispute is in sight.
Mr Walsh told Il Sole 24 Ore: ‘If in case of a strike 100% of flights will, we believe, be guaranteed. BA will not only not lose money it will end up saving.' The days when the trade unions could ground airlines were gone, he added. He also revealled that the credit crunch had forced BA to cut its flight capacity by about 10%. At the moment we have recouped about 1.5% of the lost quota.'
A spokesman for the Unite union confirmed ballot papers were sent out to members yesterday and the union made no recommendation on whether members should vote for or against accepting the proposal. The vote is expected to take two weeks and the union has yet to decide on whether to pursue further strike action if its members refused the offer.
