Tobacco seizure first at Heathrow
07.03.10
More than a tonne of liquid tobacco has been seized by UK Border Agency staff at Heathrow Airport. The packages of tobacco molasses, used in traditional Middle Eastern hookah pipes, were found in a cargo consignment declared as ‘fresh papaya’ from Saudi Arabia.
The syrupy substance had to be sent for forensic checks to confirm what it was. It is understood to be the first seizure of its type at Heathrow. If it had been declared properly about £77,000 worth of tax would have been due.
The UK Border Agency Heathrow Director Phillip Astle said: ‘This is a substantial and unusual haul of tobacco and an excellent find by our officers.‘
