BA's June traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometers, fell by 11.1 percent after the first 9 days of the month were affected by by cabin crew strikes. Passenger capacity, measured in available seat kilometers, was down 8.6 percent, which resulted in a passenger load factor decrease of 2.1 points versus last year, to 77.5 percent.
The strike action accounted for a 5 precent reduction in capacity. Traffic comprised a 9.2 percent decrease in premium traffic and an 11.4 percent decrease in non-premium traffic. Cargo, measured in Cargo Ton Kilometers, rose by 5.4 percent. BA said its total passengers for the month were 2.57m, down from 2.93m in June 2009.
Traffic, and as a result profitability, in the first quarter, has been affected by seven days of volcanic ash airspace closures in April and 23 days of strike action in May and June. It was 14.9 percent down on quarter one 2009 and capacity, measured in available seat kilometers, was down 11.3 percent, resulting in a passenger load factor 3.1 points lower than last year.
A spokesman for the airline said although the yields (average fares) over the period have been stronger year-on-year, reflecting the economic improvement, they have not fully offset the impact of lower volumes. However, he added that market conditions continue to show improvement. Cabin crew will vote on Tuesday on whether to accept a new pay deal to avert further strikes.
