BMI wants CAA action on Heathrow domestic passenger charges
04.02.11
BMI has asked the UK aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, to investigate BAA over the increase in fees for domestic passengers at Heathrow. The airline said BAA is ‘unreasonably discriminating’ against domestic passengers and domestic airlines operating from Heathrow.
Increases in domestic passenger charges at Heathrow by more than 50% from April 1 were blamed by BMI for its decision to axe its route between Heathrow and Glasgow from March 27. BAA denied that the fee change is to blame and said that the route is unprofitable - with reports suggesting BMI was losing £1 million a month on it - and the the airline is using the fee change to mask its decision to use its Heathrow slots for more profitable medium and long haul flights.
The airline said it is launching a complaint against the increased domestic passenger fees, which it is also challenging in the courts. However, BMI said in a statement that it remains ‘committed to Scotland and Northern Ireland and regards its United Kingdom and Ireland network as part of its core business’.
