Airlines dismiss ‘Boris Island’ airports
01.03.10
A group including some of the world's leading airlines have dealt a body blow for the Mayor’s plans to replace Heathrow with a new airport in the Thames Estuary. The proposed £40bn six-runway airport would be built on reclaimed land and has been dubbed 'Boris Island'. It would end the need for Heathrow's third-runway and flights over south-west London, leading to Heathrow's eventual closure.
However, the Board of Airline Representatives - which makes up 90% of Heathrow's airlines - said there are insurmountable safety risks concerning the estuary's bird colonies, which would result in aircraft strikes like the one that caused a plane to ditch in the Hudson River in New York last year.
BA's chief executive, Willie Walsh, also said that a survey commissioned by Medway Council suggests closing Heathrow would lead to a 'vast wasteland west of London'. The survey's findings are going to be presented to deputy Mayor, Kit Malthouse, this week.
