Unite 'neutral' on BA pay offer vote
01.07.10
BA cabin crew union Unite is to shift from its previous stance by putting the airline’s latest pay offer to its members without recommending they reject it, ‘a person with knowledge of the matter’ told Bloomberg. The 12,000 cabin crew will be asked to vote on the package in a ballot conducted by Electoral Reform Services as early as the weekend.
Unite’s new position may indicate that it regards the chances of securing further compromise from the BA as diminishing. The airline has taken a tough stance and operated an increasing number of flights during each successive strike. Some press reports also suggest that cabin crew can no longer afford to fight the airline after striking for 22 days already this year.
The airline issued fresh proposals to settle the dispute on June 25, without restoring the travel perks Unite had said were key to a deal. A previous offer was rejected by 81% of respondents. BA is also pressing ahead with plans to recruit 1250 new cabin crew on lower pay and new terms in what is effectively a new airline within the airline.
